It's an ideal location to rent a car if you're looking to explore nearby destinations like Meknes, Moulay Idriss and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, as well as the blue-hued city of Chefchaouen.
While all of these destinations can be reached by public transport, hiring a car in Fes makes it a LOT easier.
Over the years, exploring Morocco with a rental car has served up some amazing experiences, allowing me to discover the country at my own pace and visit the sites that really capture my interest. While Morocco's trains and buses are dependable and great for getting between big cities, they lack the flexibility that comes with having your own vehicle and being able to explore beyond urban centres.
With a cheap Fes rental car, you can venture off the beaten path, discover smaller towns and villages, as well as hidden gems that public transport simply can't access. That being said, always keep an eye on road signs and adjust your speed accordingly to steer clear of any fines. Roadworks are frequent in Morocco and speed limits change rapidly on approach.
In many parts of the country, it's wise to drive below the posted speed limits due to the "unique" traffic conditions. I’ve encountered everything from donkeys and camels to goats and chickens casually crossing the roads, particularly in rural towns and most noticeably on market days.
With limited pedestrian pathways in rural areas, many locals also walk along the roads and they are considered shared spaces. I try to drive with the mindset that being in a vehicle doesn’t automatically give you the right of way.

However, based on my own experiences driving in Morocco, I’ve never faced a police officer asking for a bribe. In fact, the last time I rented a car in Morocco for a road trip I was waved through every police/gendarme check I encountered!
My husband thinks this might be because I clearly look like a foreigner rather than a local. He also remembered an incident from a few years back when a tourist on a motorcycle filmed a police officer asking for a bribe, which resulted in serious repercussions for that officer.
