In my opinion, Tangier is one of the best places to rent a car in Morocco if you want to discover places like Tetouan, Al Hoceima and Asilah, as well as venture to Fes and the blue-hued city of Chefchaouen.
Over the last decade, I've found exploring Morocco with a rental car to be an incredible way to discover the country, at the pace I want and visiting the places I’m most interested to see. While the trains and buses in Morocco are quite reliable, they don’t offer the flexibility that a rental car offers.
Renting a car in Tangier lets you design your own travel itinerary, allowing you to spend more time in places that truly interest you. With your own wheels, you can stray from the usual routes and escape the tourist hotspots, all while uncovering hidden gems that public transport can't reach.

It's essential to drive cautiously in these areas, particularly on busy market days, and remember that being in a vehicle doesn’t automatically grant you the right of way.

Although it may feel intimidating to be stopped by uniformed men, it's for everyone's safety and tourists are often waved straight through. That being said, if you're looking for a more adventurous experience in Morocco, renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle is a smart choice. The rugged paths and trails in the High Atlas Mountains demand the extra traction and ground clearance that a 4x4 offers and many routes in the Sahara Desert are not suitable for smaller cars.
If you plan on venturing onto unpaved roads, it’s important to check the terms and conditions of your rental contract. Some rental companies don’t allow you to take vehicles on gravel roads and you won’t be covered by their insurance policy if you do.
Do police ask for bribes when driving in Morocco?
You may have come across blog posts or heard from fellow travellers about the police/gendarme stops in Morocco and the "need" to pay bribes. From my own experiences and conversations, most tourists pass through police checkpoints without any problems. In fact, I’ve never encountered a police officer asking for a bribe.
That being said, it's completely understandable to feel anxious about this and to think twice about renting a car in Tangier to steer clear of these situations.
A few years ago, a tourist travelling Morocco on a motorcycle recorded a police officer soliciting a bribe, which led to consequences for that officer. Since then, it seems that police have started to view tourists as "off limits" for bribes or perhaps the bribery culture on Moroccan roads is changing as a whole.
Personally, I think there is nothing to worry about and you'll probably be waved through most of the checkpoints you approach. The only time you might actually need to pay a fine is if you are genuinely violating local traffic laws.
